Finding a Rental Home on Waiheke: A Challenging Task in 2023
Finding a rental home on Waiheke can be difficult at the best of times, but this year is proving particularly challenging. The significant shortage of long-term rentals is forcing families to look at alternative accommodation and, in some cases, consider moving off the island.
There are several reasons for the lack of available properties. The biggest impact comes from COVID-19, with many owners returning home to New Zealand to be closer to family due to the pandemic in their part of the world. Additionally, some owners are selling their properties to downscale on investments or before the new Healthy Homes standards take effect. Other owners are using their properties for summer and holidaying, as overseas travel is not possible.
Low interest rates and easier lending criteria are also enabling people to buy homes for the first time. Many of these first-time buyers, who previously could not enter the property market, are moving into the properties themselves, reducing the number of homes available for rent.
Currently, there is a significant need for rental properties on Waiheke, with enquiries reaching an all-time high and no available homes to offer tenants.
